Video surveillance 100 percent Made in Munich

The IPS Intelligent Video Software technology brand has been shaping the world of video security technology for 60 years. In May 1965, the company ‘Industrietechnik Peter Schubert’ was founded in a radio and television shop in Munich's Maxvorstadt district.

What began as an idea for analogue video surveillance is now one of the leading video software technologies for security and high-security applications in Germany and Europe. "Made in Germany" for 60 years at its own development centre in Munich.

1970 – The first innovative product: the IPS Deltaguard

A look back in history shows the impressive journey. In 1965, Peter Schubert founded the company Industrietechnik Peter Schubert GmbH - IPS for short. At the time, he was running a radio and television shop with an associated workshop in Munich.

The birth of video analytics
His passion for video technology led him to develop his first ground-breaking product in 1970: the IPS Deltaguard. This innovative system worked with a photodiode glued to the screen, which was able to recognise changes in brightness in the video image.

What may seem simple from today's perspective was a technical revolution at the time and is regarded as the birth of video analysis. This visionary approach not only set a milestone in the history of video security, but also paved the way for the continuous development of intelligent video surveillance technologies.

1974 –  First appearance at the Security trade fair

In the 1970s, IPS took its first steps on the market with the IPS Deltaguard and shortly afterwards presented itself for the first time at the Security trade fair. This was not only the first major step into the public eye, but also marked the beginning of a continuous and long-term development of innovative technologies in the field of video security.

In 1980, IPS launched the Teleguard 128, a further development on the market. A logical AND link made it possible to connect two cameras and thus reduce unwanted alarms. The device had a modular design and enabled the connection of up to eight cameras - a major step towards scalable surveillance systems.

The requirements for security systems have changed constantly over the decades. IPS has always risen to these challenges and continuously developed its video technology.

1986 – IPS Teleguard 2000

While the first laptop revolutionised the world of computers and Atari and Nintendo conquered the hearts of gamers, IPS also experienced a colourful milestone. That year, we proudly presented the IPS Teleguard 2000 - the first fully colour-capable video sensor with a microprocessor and digital image processing.

This innovative sensor was a real game changer: it supported colour cameras and split the video image into an impressive 1024 fields, making detection even more accurate and performant.

With the option of connecting up to 8 video cameras, it opened up completely new perspectives. It had a video recorder output for recording events and an input for playing back video material.

Particularly noteworthy was the Teleguard 2000's ability to precisely determine object sizes - a real advance for use in outdoor areas with diverse video technology requirements.

A year to remember, not only for the development of the technology, but also for IPS!

1996 – IPS Outdoor Detection

The 1990s are here - a decade full of trends and innovations! While lava lamps, Tamagotchis and the Gameboy were thrilling young people, the IPS Teleguard Mega was setting new standards in video security technology. This ingenious tracking sensor with automatic object tracking was the first fully digital video sensor system of its kind, equipped with ten modules for ten camera channels.

At the heart of the system was IPS Outdoor Detection, our first fully software-based analytics platform. It enabled a new level of intelligent detection - reliable, flexible and customised for a wide range of outdoor scenarios.

A real highlight - the IPS 3-zone concept:

  • Green zone: objects are detected - no alarm
  • Yellow zone: Transition - alarm is activated
  • Red zone: intrusion - immediate alarm

This principle was not just new - it was revolutionary. And it became the patented standard that is still used in modern video management systems today.

2002 – Teleguard Evox

The euro is introduced in Germany and 11 other European countries.
And at IPS? No less history was made - at least in the world of video security.

Introduction of the Teleguard Evox
A real milestone:

  • 10 modules with 4 camera channels each
  • Fully network-compatible
  • Connection of computers for recording video footage and alarm data

Innovations that were ahead of their time
The Teleguard Evox brought sophisticated search functions to video recordings as well as extensive playback options. For the first time, pan/tilt cameras could be conveniently controlled using a mouse instead of a keyboard or joystick.

Revolution in object tracking
IPS also introduced 3D georeferencing with simultaneous multiple object tracking in 2002.
This meant that the system could track several objects simultaneously and automatically - a real game changer.

Still unique today. Revolutionary at the time.
These functions were absolutely groundbreaking at the time - and are still unique today.

2002 at IPS - a year full of progress, vision and technological courage.

2006 – The years 2000 were years full of progress

In 2006, IPS became part of the Securiton Germany family. This allowed Securiton to specifically expand its portfolio to include video security. To this day, IPS Intelligent Video Software continues to be successfully marketed as an independent technology brand.

In 2008, we took a bold step:
From then on, we focused exclusively on developing pure software solutions, while discontinuing hardware production. This step was rewarded: the first version of the incomparable IPS video management software “IPS VideoManager” was launched on the market. This marked the beginning of a new era, as IPS VideoManager was the first completely software-based product to intelligently combine video analytics and video management on a Windows-based platform.

One year later, in 2009, IPS VideoManager was used for a spectacular assignment: the NATO summit in the Baden-Baden and Kehl region, which became a high-security zone. Around 25,000 police officers were deployed. Some of you may remember, there were numerous incidents during this event – the security requirements were enormous.

Securiton used IPS VideoManager to provide efficient video surveillance covering all cameras – from helicopters and mobile units to stationary systems – as well as image control in the police command centers. This provided the police with live images of the locations around the clock.

This project was an extraordinary challenge for Securiton and IPS video technology, which we mastered with flying colors! The result was impressive in terms of quality and ensured complete customer satisfaction.

2010 – Securiton obtains its first significant certifications for its video analytics with IPS.

The IPS Outdoor Detection video analytics module received the coveted iLids certificate from the former UK Home Office department that tested and evaluated image-based detection systems. IPS met all requirements and achieved the top category with virtually zero false alarms. The iLids certification was a prerequisite for numerous tenders from the British government and in the Middle East, and paved the way for IPS to be included in the Home Office's official security catalog.

Pioneering spirit in video security
IPS was the first manufacturer to port video analytics to a camera platform which significantly strengthened its market position. IPS VideoAnalytics (Axis), integrated into the ACAP platform from technology partner Axis, marked a milestone. IPS was honored with the Axis Innovative Solution Award for this achievement, among other things for the innovative and user-friendly IPS Web Configurator.

In 2013, IPS Intrusion Detection (Axis) video analytics also received iLids certification, a real-time intrusion alert system for secured outdoor areas. Once again, the test confirmed full compliance with the highest security standards. IPS was the first video analytics manufacturer to receive this certification for camera-based analytics.
Once again, IPS demonstrated that cutting-edge expertise, progress, and innovative strength have always shaped the development of video security.
